City to improve bend along Welcome Zenzile

The City of Cape Town’s Transport Infrastructure Implementation Department will commence with the road widening of Welcome Zenzile in Khayelitsha today, 30 May 2023. Residents are advised that the project will take approximately four weeks, if all goes as planned. Work will take place between 07:00 and 17:30 from Monday to Friday and traffic will be accommodated with a stop-and-go system. 

The City is implementing this corner improvement at Welcome Zenzile Street in Khayelitsha to address the road safety concerns raised by the community. The current bend does not meet the demand and therefore the road widening will improve pedestrian and vehicular safety.

The project is also offering local employment opportunities for six residents.

'Road safety is one of the Urban Mobility Directorate's top priorities. I am grateful that our teams have responded to the community's concerns and are taking action by widening this corner along Welcome Zenzile Street. Once complete, motorists, cyclists and pedestrians will be accommodated more comfortably around this bend,' said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Mobility, Councillor Rob Quintas.

The following work items will be executed over the next month:

•        Removing existing kerbs, channels and edging

•        Laying of edgings, kerbs and channels

•        Construction of the road

•        Construction of the sidewalk

•        Asphalt surfacing

•        Installation of concrete bollards

•        Installation of road signs

The road links two communities in Kuyasa in Khayelitsha who were previously separated by a stormwater channel. Welcome Zenzile Street facilitates access between the two areas.
